HDG Square Nut | Oversized Tapped Utility Nuts | Power Line Fasteners

Yokelink Square Nuts are the industry standard for securing machine bolts, carriage bolts, and double arming bolts in overhead poleline and transmission applications. The classic four-sided design provides a large bearing surface for wrenches, making it easy for linemen to apply high torque safely, even while wearing heavy insulating gloves.

Oversized Tapped for Perfect Assembly: To accommodate the thickness of our premium Hot Dip Galvanized coating, all Yokelink utility square nuts are overtapped (tapped oversize) after galvanizing. This ensures a smooth, bind-free assembly onto heavily galvanized bolts in the field. Manufactured from high-grade carbon steel, our square nuts meet the rigorous mechanical requirements of ASTM A563 Grade A and are fully galvanized to ASTM A153 Class C for exceptional rust protection.

    Production Process of Square Nut

Square nuts are produced from ASTM A36 carbon steel. After material preparation, they are formed by cold heading or stamping to obtain the square shape. Then a central hole is punched, followed by tapping to create precise internal threads. Deburring and chamfering are carried out for better assembly. All nuts are hot-dip galvanized in accordance with ASTM A153 for corrosion resistance. Production and inspection comply with IEEE C135.1 and IEEE C135.80 standards.

Yokelink Quality Control and Testing Equipments

We don't just reference standards; we also verify them in practice: each batch of products undergoes destructive tensile testing in our internal laboratory to ensure load performance exceeds the minimum requirements of IEEE C135.1 / IEEE C138.80 or CSA specification; we use optical comparators to ensure the geometric accuracy of chamfered tips and rolled threads, enabling convenient on-site installation; at the same time, we conduct comprehensive testing on Rockwell hardness, coating thickness, and other parameters, and each shipment is accompanied by the original manufacturer's material specifications (MTRs) and quality inspection reports, with all data traceable back to the raw material furnace number.

    The Application of Square Nut

HDG Square Nut | Oversized Tapped Utility Nuts | IEEE C135.80 & CSA C83

Square nuts are widely used in steel structures, and mechanical assembly. They are often matched with bolts, step bolts, and other fasteners, providing stable and secure connections. The square shape effectively prevents rotation during installation. Made from ASTM A307 carbon steel and hot-dip galvanized per ASTM A153, they feature excellent corrosion resistance. Fully compliant with IEEE C135.1 and IEEE C135.80 standards, they ensure reliable performance in long-term outdoor power line applications.

    Yokelink Product Quality Inspection Report

We provide comprehensive inspection services for machine bolts, including SGS test bolts and formal Production Part Inspect Report (PPIR). The SGS tests verify the bolts’ compliance with international standards like ASTM A307 and IEEE C135.80, covering mechanical properties and corrosion resistance. The PPIR details all inspection items, ensuring each machine bolt meets dimensional, performance and quality requirements, providing reliable quality assurance for overhead line and industrial applications.

    Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q1: Why are square nuts often used instead of hex nuts on utility poles?

A: Square nuts are preferred in many poleline applications because their four flat sides provide a larger bearing surface area for wrenches. This makes them significantly easier for linemen to grip and turn securely, especially when working aloft and wearing heavy electrical safety gloves. Additionally, square nuts fit perfectly into the square recesses of certain poleline brackets, preventing rotation during tightening.

Q2: What does "overtapped" mean for a galvanized nut?

A: "Overtapped" means the internal threads of the nut are cut slightly larger than standard dimensions. Because Hot Dip Galvanizing (HDG) adds a thick, protective layer of zinc to the mating bolt's threads, an overtapped nut is necessary to ensure the nut threads onto the bolt smoothly without binding or seizing in the field.

Q3: What is the difference between a Square Nut and a Heavy Hex Nut in poleline hardware?

A: While both are widely used, a square nut has four sides, offering a larger flat surface area. This makes it much easier for linemen to grip securely with standard wrenches or pliers, especially when wearing thick, high-voltage safety gloves. A heavy hex nut has six sides and is typically used in tighter spaces (like transmission tower joints) where the wrench turning angle is limited.

Q4: Why does my galvanized square nut get stuck or bind on the bolt during installation?

A: If a nut binds on a Hot-Dip Galvanized (HDG) bolt, it usually means the nut was not overtapped.

The HDG process adds a thick, irregular layer of zinc to the bolt's threads. To compensate for this, Yokelink poleline square nuts are specially overtapped (threaded slightly larger) after galvanization, ensuring a smooth, bind-free assembly every time.

Q5: Do I need to use a washer with a square nut on a wooden utility pole?

A: Yes, it is highly recommended. When tightening a square nut directly against a wooden pole, the high clamping force can cause the nut to crush and sink into the wood fibers, weakening the connection over time. You should always place a square flat washer or a curved washer beneath the nut to distribute the load evenly across the wood surface.

Q6: Can I use a standard stainless steel nut with a hot-dip galvanized machine bolt?

A: It is not recommended. Mixing stainless steel and hot-dip galvanized carbon steel in outdoor poleline environments can lead to galvanic corrosion (bimetallic corrosion), which prematurely degrades the zinc coating. For maximum longevity and safety, always pair an HDG square nut with an HDG bolt.
